The 9th pick in a 12-team draft is not the most ideal situation this season. What I’ll show you is that it might not be so bad after all.
As you’ll soon see, my team ends up having the #1 ranked starting lineup and the #2 highest scoring roster. LT’s team is the highest scoring total roster. That’s due naturally to LT, but also due to the fact this team just happened to draft more QBs (higher total point scorers, but not necessarily the best use of roster spots).
Using pcDrafter’s Gold logic as my assistant, I’ll show you how it is possible to draft a championship caliber team from the 9th spot.
I’ll draft based on pcDrafter’s Gold recommendations and deviate as I see fit on occasion. That’s often times the best way to use pcDrafter – it’s you and pcDrafter together.
The rest of the mock teams will follow Average Draft Position data while following roster requirements.
The league settings used will follow those of the popular FFTOC scoring settings, plus I added a point per reception.
The starting lineups will look like this:
QB
2 RB
3 WR/TE
K
DEF
Note: This combination of league rules and parameters heavily ratchets up the value of good wide receivers. In addition, RB’s that catch 50+ balls a season (example: Reggie Bush) greatly benefit from these parameters.
---
pcDrafter Tip: override the default MAX position settings when your league has rather atypical rules (like above).
Rule of Thumb: set each position MAX to 2-times the number of starters you have at a given position, but do NOT exceed a MAX setting of five.
---
Okay, lets get to it and start the draft!
Round 1 #9 - Reggie Bush – RB – NO
Gold suggests Steve Smith and also likes Reggie Bush. As we all know fantasy is still dominated by running backs so I lean towards Bush. Plus, notice Smith’s ADP at round 2 pick 4. That happens to be your spot in the next round. Bush is the guy here, as he’s the best RB on the board. He should have a great year returning to New Orleans’ ideal fantasy offense with Drew Brees at the helm.
Round 2 #16 - Steve Smith – WR – CAR
You could wait for a WR and grab your 2nd RB here, getting Maurice Jones-Drew or Ronnie Brown. If you did that you would end up with a solid RB duo for the entire season. On the other hand, if you did grab Drew you’re looking at Bush and Drew with the same bye week in the 4th week, giving yourself an almost sure loss that week. Also, by the time you picked again you’re looking at Houshmandzadeh, Andre Johnson or Lee Evans as your #1 WR. Simply put, I would not be comfortable with that especially given our league setup. With that said, go after Steve Smith here, the #1 rated WR and #1 player available according to pcDrafter Gold Rank. Also, according to the ADP, there should be some great values available at RB later on.
Round 3 #33 - T.J. Houshmandzadeh – WR – CIN
T.J. is the #1 rated available player according to the Gold Rank. Easy decision right? On the other hand pcDrafter shows him being available with your next pick, with an ADP of round 4 pick 8. In that case why don’t you take Andre Johnson now and then grab T.J. with your next pick, making your WR trio an out-of-this-world corps of receivers. Let’s see what would be available at RB with my 5th pick if I did draft the ideal receiving corps. Tatum Bell and Chester Taylor would be the top 2 RBs left. Once again I wouldn’t be comfortable with either of those guys as my number 2. So let’s take the top rated available WR here in T.J. and try to grab a highly underrated starting RB with the next pick.
Round 4 #40 - Ahman Green – RB – HOU (or B. Jacobs or M. Lynch)
The Gold Rank slightly favors drafting one of the top receivers in Lee Evans, Javon Walker or Burress, but like I discussed earlier the RBs available after this pick would not suffice as my number 2 RB. Instead, let’s target Ahman Green, the 4th rated player available according to Gold, and of course the top rated RB left on the board. I believe he’ll succeed in Gary Kubiak’s fantasy friendly offensive system, which was often on display in Denver. Yes, he’s an aging veteran, but the league rules favor a good receiving RB like Green here. Also, keep your eye on the next emerging RB (think Maurice Jones-Drew or Ron Dayne from last year). On a side note; if you’re not comfortable with Green and his aging legs, you could grab Brandon Jacobs or rookie Marshawn Lynch here.
Round 5 #57 - Laveranues Coles – WR – NYJ
A quarterback is the pick here, right? The big run on QBs has started. McNabb, Bulger and Young were just taken. Not quite yet, don’t get nervous and fall into the QB trap. Believe it or not, a QB projected ahead of Bulger and Young, and right behind McNabb and Palmer will still be available with your next pick. Coles is the #1 Gold Ranked player available and he makes perfect sense here as well. This receiving machine should not miss a beat, especially with the addition of versatile Thomas Jones. The Jets offense should be able to sustain some more drives this season, giving Coles more opportunities in the end zone.
Round 6 #64 – Tony Romo – QB – DAL
This seems to be a relatively easy choice. The only wrinkle would be if you were worried about Ahman Green’s durability. You could back him up here with Tatum Bell, which would be a good #3 RB. On the other hand, let’s try to go after a 3rd RB in the upcoming rounds so we can round out a solid starting lineup with this pick. Romo should continue his strong play this season with T.O. and Glenn still in Dallas. Romo also happens to be ranked as the 3rd best option by the Gold Ranking. In this league’s scoring system he’s projected to do as well as Palmer, McNabb and Bulger! All of whom were picked well before this pick. Palmer was picked amazingly with the 1st pick in the 3rd round! Palmer is a better QB and safer pick, but definitely does not warrant that high of a pick.
Round 7 #81 – Bears Defense
You may think about grabbing a backup RB here and pcDrafter sees Ladell Betts and LenDale White moving up in the overall rankings, but it looks like there should be good options available with the next pick. The Gold Rank also sees big value in WR Bernard Berrian, but I’m very comfortable with my starters. This was the toughest choice yet. Rather than start on solidifying the bench I’d rather strengthen the starting roster by taking the Bears D. As a starter, they’ll help my starting lineup at this spot. If I wait for a defense until my next pick or after, I could end up with the Patriots in the 9th round, but the Ds ranked from 3rd to 7th seem to be a wash. Let’s roll with Chicago here, rounding out a stellar starting lineup. Plus, Chicago has one of the easiest schedules in the playoff weeks, facing the Redskins, Vikings and Packers in weeks 14,15 and 16!
Round 8 #88 – Bernard Berrian – WR – CHI
I believe I said a RB would be targeted here, but wow, Bernard Berrian is still on the board, and he’s projected 10 points higher than the next WR and 35 points higher than the 3rd WR. All of whom will not be available with my next pick. Besides, Reuben Droughns, a possible #3 RB should still be available later on. So let’s roll with Berrian as the first backup player drafted, even though he’ll play like a #3 or even #2 WR at times this season. Grossman can still through a nice deep ball, and Berrian is usually on the receiving end of those passes. Berrian also happens to be the #1 Gold Ranked player available!
Round 9 #105 – D.J. Hackett - WR – SEA
The Gold Rank suggests taking D.J. Hackett and only D.J. Hackett. I suspect that’s because he’s projected 23 points higher than any other WR. In addition, pcDrafter sees other teams are on the hunt for WRs and we can deny them a player that could come up huge this year! Taking points from other teams is a variable that often goes unnoticed by new Fantasy managers and Hackett is secured as the #2 WR in Seattle behind Branch, a role that should provide for plenty of opportunities.
What about that backup RB you say? Well, he should still be available in the next round. What about a top backup QB? I could grab Favre here but an equally rated QB will be available much later. So why not take Hackett here, pcDrafter must know what it’s talking about. Notice that none of our WRs has the same bye week, amazing! I think I’m done with WRs, as this team is stacked and with these league rules, you need plenty of good ones.
Round 10 #112 – Rueben Droughns – RB – NYG
I waited and waited for a backup RB because I thought this guy would be available here. Well look at that, he is! He also happens to be ranked #1 by the Gold Rank, probably because he’s projected 18 points higher than the next RB and an astonishing 62 points higher than the 5th ranked RB. Droughns is a bit of a steal here at #112 as a 3rd RB. His ADP is really low, which is why he should be available here. If you can live with your 3rd RB splitting time at his position, then Droughns is your guy. Don’t be afraid to grab a 3rd RB sooner, that’s if you’re OK with missing out on a top Defense and top backup
WR.
Round 11 #129 – Rex Grossman – QB – CHI
I like Grossman here as the top rated QB available. Grossman, you say? Yes, Grossman. Romo is a solid starter and his bye week happens to fall on the same week the Bears face off against the Lions. The same Lions team that is projected as having one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL. This team should not skip a beat at QB all season.
Round 12 #136 – Chris Brown – RB – TEN
It’s nice to be able to grab a possible starting RB in the 12th round. Brown should be available here as your 4th RB. He’s projected 44 points ahead of the 3rd ranked RB, so getting him here is a smart idea. LenDale White is pushing him, but he’ll still get plenty of time as the season moves along.
Round 13 #153 – Michael Pittman – RB – TB
Pittman provides solid depth to the RB corps and he catches a lot of balls too, something you need with these scoring rules. Five running backs are not always ideal but with Ahman Green being the #2, you need to back him up with solid upside options. Pittman is projected 33 points higher than the next best option in Lorenzo Booker. He’ll still be busy in Tampa even if Cadillac stays healthy. If Cadillac can’t stay healthy, which is likely, Pittman would be a solid #3 fantasy back.
Round 14 #160 – Oakland’s Defense
Sure, Green Bay, Indy and Buffalo’s D are all available here. They would make great backups, but who needs a great backup D when you have Chicago? Oakland is a perfect fit as the backup to Chicago. Chicago opens with a tough game against San Diego, while Oakland plays turnover prone Detroit. In week 3 the Bears play Dallas, a fairly difficult match-up. You could probably roll with them but why not start Oakland vs. Cleveland’s young and inexperienced offense! Better yet, Oakland has Houston during Chicago’s bye week, week 9. If you don’t have enough evidence, lastly Oakland plays Minnesota’s week offense in week 11 while Chicago has a tough match-up against Seattle. Plus, Oakland’s defense behind coordinator Rob Ryan is an up and coming young squad. Enough said.
Round 15 #177 – Matt Stover – K – BAL
Old reliable Matt Stover should be available in the last round. I have nothing wrong with grabbing him, as Baltimore’s offense often stalls in the red zone. Also, the Ravens D often gives the offense great field position, setting up Stover to excel as a fantasy kicker.
Roster
QB – Tony Romo, Rex Grossman
RB – Reggie Bush, Ahman Green, Reuben Droughns, Chris Brown, Michael Pittman
WR – Steve Smith, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Laveranues Coles, Bernard Berrian, D.J. Hackett
K – Matt Stover
D – Chicago, Oakland
This team overall looks great, especially with the one-point per reception rule and given you must start three WRs each week!
The only concern is the #2 RB, which is why I drafted 5 guys at the position. I still trust Green to have a good season as a #2. Still, I’ll be watching the waiver wire all season for that breakout RB that emerges every year.
I have an embarrassment of riches at the receiver position, so no problem there.
Romo is more than capable as the Cowboys starting QB. He was in the Pro Bowl last year, let’s not forget that!
Last but not least, my special teams are great with the Bears in charge. Stover’s bye week is week 8, so by then you should have someone you’d be willing to drop for that bye week kicker.
